Artist Of The Week - Meet Chloé Berland

Posted by Mélina Tremblay on

Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Chloé Berland, I’m a Brazilian artist who has been living in Montréal since 2012. I’m also currently finishing a master's degree in political science, but art is my secret little side hustle. I take a lot of pride in having two totally different personas, it’s what keeps me motivated, creative and on my toes.

What is your most important artist tool, something you can’t live without?

A good, solid needle. I am mostly known for my embroidery and textile art, though I dabble in digital illustration as well! I always seem to go back to stitching though, and I embroider so hard that I bend my needles often, which is why I need 57 by my side at all times.

Describe a real-life situation that inspired you.

All of my art is inspired by my life really. The colors, themes or even mediums I use are strictly defined by my mood or what I’m going through. If I was to give you an example though I could tell you about my tarot illustrations. I started reimagining major arcana tarot cards after my last breakup, and they’re all drawings of me, of my face, of my body... At the beginning, I would pick the cards based on what stage of the breakup I was in. Though it’s been like 2 ish years now and I’ve been over it for ages, I still call it my self love project. There’s no bigger powerful move than to draw yourself over and over. Truly a main character moment isn’t it?

What is your dream project?

It may be weird to say but I don’t have one. The thing about my art process is that I don’t define myself or my style at all. My art, very much like me, changes constantly. Last month I wanted to embroider everyday, this week I’m exclusively doing crochet. So I don’t have a dream project, like long term I mean. I do love myself a big project, but I’m slightly obsessive, so I tend to squeeze 40h of work in 3 days. I guess you could say there’s a new dream project every week, and I usually zoom through it... just to start the next one.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

STOP SAYING YOU’RE NOT CREATIVE OR GOOD ENOUGH AT ART. Can you believe I used to say that out loud? I forgot all about it until my best friends reminded me that I did, and that was only like 5 years ago. The thing is everyone’s creative, you just need to find your niche and dive in.

Can we buy your art? If yes, where can we buy it?

Yes you can! I have a website, it’s « ». Most pieces are currently sold out, but if you see something you like, either on my store or my portfolio, you can shoot me a dm on Instagram. I’ll gladly do custom projects or reproduce something, so no reason to be shy.

Do you have a project that you would like to talk to us about?

I guess I could tell you about my latest project! The pandemic sadness has finally gotten to me so I haven’t been feeling motivated to create things. BUT I recently discovered crochet, like maybe 2-3 months ago, and I’m now obsessed. It’s so relaxing, it doesn’t feel like an effort at all. Right now, I just finished an intricate sweater with flames all over it. You can see it in the pictures above!
